My Mental Battle

A poem by Ryan D. Adcox

Sometimes I can’t tell my left from my right

Struggling each day with a severe mental fight

I’m tired of the struggle to find words to say

To explain myself in an understanding way

People say they understand and it’s no big deal

How can they say that? They don’t know how I feel!

With an injured brain I fool the crowd

No one can see the invisible rain cloud

It’s not like a severed leg or a broken arm

Folks can see the risks of impending harm

Gradually the damage and pain go away

But an injured brain is here to stay

It’s crazy how quickly memory can fade

And how making a point is always delayed

Living like this throughout the years

With its many challenges has brought many tears

I have dreams that I can’t fulfill

I lack the ability to think, and  have lots of time to kill

Confusion reigns within my head

Sometimes it makes me wish I were dead

But I carry on for those whom I love

With hopes of support from God above

To survive this war, this severe mental fight

And also

To discern my left from my right.

A Unique Condition, the Same Disposition

A poem by Ryan D. Adcox

We are all different with the same disposition

Each living with a unique condition

We might be seen as folks of less worth

If only they had known us closer to our birth

It’s not our fault that we are this way

Each of us at one point just had a bad day

A day that changed our lives as a result

And made each life more difficult

It’s up to each of us to stand up and fight

And help those around us see the light

Never give up this isn’t the end

Life will go on, our hearts can mend

Sometimes there’s frustration sometimes there’s pain

Unfortunately that’s what comes with an injured brain

Striving to survive with a unique condition

We are all different with the same disposition.
